The Geography Teachers’ Association of New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory (GTA NSW & ACT) is a not-for-profit, incorporated body that represents the professional interests of Geography teachers in NSW & ACT and Geographical education more generally.
The Association is active in representing the interests of geography teachers in areas of public concern, by investigating and making recommendations to appropriate authorities on educational policies and other matters of State, Territory and National interest in which geography teachers have concern. The GTA NSW & ACT disseminates material from ACARA, NESA and TQI to its members.
The Association organises conferences for geography teachers, designed to assist teachers implement changes in Geography Syllabuses and curriculum documents to provide teachers with an opportunity to refresh their professional teaching by sharing ideas for classroom and fieldwork activities and hearing about current developments in geographical education.
The activities of the Geography Teachers Association include publishing and distributing materials related to the teaching of geography, providing and promoting professional learning activities for geography teachers, making awards to geography students and teachers and encouraging research in geographical education. Publications of the Association include the Geography Bulletin distributed quarterly, teaching resources and other student materials.
The Geography Teachers Association maintains close relationships with NESA, the New South Wales Educational Standards Authority, the Geographical Society of New South Wales, the ACT Education Directorate, Board of Senior Secondary Studies and TQI.
The Council of the Geography Teachers Association is elected annually by members. All positions are honorary, and the Council members devote considerable time to the management of the Association. Members are invited to nominate for membership of the council, which provides an outstanding opportunity for service to the profession.
The GTA NSW & ACT is affiliated to the Australian Geography Teachers Association (AGTA)
GTANSW & ACT outsources administrative and financial activities to the NSW Professional Teachers Council (PTC) and uses the facilities of the PTC for Board meetings, events and storage of GTA property.
